Born Harry Rubinstein in New York City. In 1923 he teamed with lyricist Bert Kalmar in a creative partnership that produced words and music for nine Broadway musicals and several films, including three Marx Brothers vehicles. They also collaborated on many of the scripts. In the romanticized film biography of the duo, THREE LITTLE WORDS (1950), Ruby was portrayed by Red Skelton.
Ruby's popular song hits include "Everyone Says I Love You," "Give Me the Simple Life," "I Wanna Be Loved by You," "A Kiss to Build a Dream On," "Nevertheless (I'm in Love with You)," "Thinking of You," "This Heart of Mine," "Three Little Words" and "Who's Sorry Now." As a story and screenwriter, Ruby contributed to the scripts of THE KID FROM SPAIN (1932), BRIGHT LIGHTS (1935), WALKING ON AIR (1936), THE LIFE OF THE PARTY (1937), EVERYBODY SING (1938), LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING (1949) and LOVELY TO LOOK AT (1952).
