Eva Marie Saint
(1924 -     )
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film

Born in Newark, NJ. Luminous blond leading lady groomed for stardom in the 1950s, only to find few vehicles worthy of her talents. Saint studied acting at Bowling Green University, and later found work in both radio and TV drama. For her first film role, that of Marlon Brando's tenement love interest in ON THE WATERFRONT (1954), she won an Oscar® for Best Supporting Actress. She was extremely effective in A HATFUL OF RAIN (1957), a startlingly frank drama of drug addiction. Alfred Hitchcock cast her opposite Cary Grant in NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959, a deliciously romantic performance), and Otto Preminger costarred her with Paul Newman in EXODUS (1960), but her splendid work in those two classics didn't keep her star from fading. A younger generation may know her only as Cybill Shepherd's mother on the "Moonlighting" TV show. She won an Emmy in 1990 for the miniseries "People Like Us," and has also appeared in a number of undistinguished made-for-TV movies.

Some of her other notable films include: 1956:THAT CERTAIN FEELING; 1957: RAINTREE COUNTY; 1962: ALL FALL DOWN ;1964: 36 HOURS; 1965: THE SANDPIPER; 1966: THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING! THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING!, GRAND PRIX ;1969: THE STALKING MOON; 1970: LOVING; 1972: CANCEL MY RESERVATION; 1986: NOTHING IN COMMON; 1996: MARIETTE IN ECSTASY; 1997: TIME TO SAY GOODBYE?; 2000: I DREAMED OF AFRICA; 2005: BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE, DON'T COME KNOCKING; 2006: SUPERMAN RETURNS.

Since 1952, she has been married to TV director Jeffrey Hayden. Their daughter is TV producer Laurette Hayden.
