Supervising film editor who entered American film as an assistant editor for MACHO CALLAHAN (1970). Often associated with the films of Robert Zemeckis, Schmidt's other notable unnominated editing credits include THE LAST REMAKE OF BEAU GESTE (1977), JAWS 2 (1978), BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985), RUTHLESS PEOPLE (1986), BACK TO THE FUTURE PARTS II & III (1989, 1990), THE ROCKETEER (1991), DEATH BECOMES HER and THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS (both 1992), ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES (1993), THE BIRDCAGE and CHAIN REACTION (both 1996), CONTACT (1997), PRIMARY COLORS (1998), WHAT LIES BENEATH and CAST AWAY (both 2000), PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (2003), and THE CHUMSCRUBBER (2005).

His father, Arthur P. Schmidt, was an Academy Award-nominated film editor.
