Born Robert Langford Modini in Los Angeles, CA. Steely-eyed, resolute leading man, in films from 1939 (opposite Deanna Durbin in Universal's FIRST LOVE, where he gave her her first on-screen kiss), who hit a peak in the 1950s starring in two Douglas Sirk weepies: WRITTEN ON THE WIND (1956) and THE TARNISHED ANGELS (1958); best known as gangster-buster Eliot Ness on TV's "The Untouchables" (1959-1963). Stack wryly spoofed his humorless tough-guy image in the hilarious comedy, AIRPLANE! (1980).
Other notable credits include TO BE OR NOT TO BE (1942), BULLFIGHTER AND THE LADY (1951), BWANA DEVIL (1952), THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY (1954), GOOD MORNING, MISS DOVE (1955), IS PARIS BURNING? (1966), 1941 (1979), CADDYSHACK II (1988), JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO (1990) and his last feature film, KILLER BUD (2001).
