Robert Strauss

Born in New York City. Burly character actor and comedian of the American stage and screen, he was outstanding as "Animal" in both the Broadway and Hollywood versions of STALAG 17 (1953), a role for which he was nominated for an Oscar®. The son of a theater costume designer, he had worked as a busboy, a salesman, and a singing waiter, among other occupations, before starting his acting career. In addition to acting in many plays and films, he also appeared in numerous TV shows.

Other notable screen credits include THE BRIDGES AT TOKO-RI, THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH and THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM (all 1955), LI'L ABNER (1959), THE WHEALER DEALERS (1963), STAGE TO THUNDER ROCK (1964), HARLOW (1965), FRANKIE AND JOHNNY (1966), FORT UTAH (1967) and his last film, DAGMARS HETA TROSOR (1972, a.k.a. "Dagmar's Hot Pants, Inc.").
