Born in Chicago, IL. Successful playwright whose plays became adapted to film, sometimes by others (HAPPY TIME, 1952; PROMISE AT DAWN, 1971; AVANTI!, 1972). He collaborated with Billy Wilder and Ernest Lehman on adapting his play Sabrina Fair to the screen (SABRINA, 1954), and he and Cornielia Otis Skinner wrote the screen adaptation of their play THE PLEASURE OF HIS COMPANY (1961). As a screenwriter (alone or in collaboration), Taylor wrote the screenplays for THE EDDY DUCHIN STORY and MONTECARLO (both 1956) and Hitchcock's VERTIGO (1958). Lighter fare includes screenplays for GOODBYE AGAIN (1961), THREE ON A COUCH (1966), ROSIE! (1968), TOPAZ (1969) and THE LOVE MACHINE (1971).
Not to be confused with director-screenwriter Sam Taylor who directed Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford in an adaptation of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW (1929) that became famous for the credit line: "By William Shakespeare, with additional dialogue by Sam Taylor." This is another Samuel Taylor entirely.
