Born in Dublin, Ireland. Dynamic yet somewhat stiff leading man of British and some American films. On the stage from 1937, he was a founder-member of the Dundee Repertory Theatre in 1939. After distinguished WW II service with the King's Own Light Infantry Parachute Regiment, he returned briefly to the stage before launching a modestly successful film career in the late 40s, highlighted by a memorable performance in THE HASTY HEART (1949), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award as best actor. Other notable screen credits include THE INTERRUPTED JOURNEY (also 1949), STAGE FRIGHT (1950), THE STORY OF ROBIN HOOD AND HIS MERRIE MEN (1952), THE SWORD AND THE ROSE (1953), ROB ROY and THE DAM BUSTERS (both 1954), A MAN CALLED PETER and THE VIRGIN QUEEN (both 1955), D-DAY THE SIXTH OF JUNE* (1956), SAINT JOAN (1957), THE LONGEST DAY* (1962), OPERATION CROSSBOW (1965), ASYLUM (1972), THE BIG SLEEP (1978) and MURDER ONE (1988).
In 1986, he published an autobiography: Caught in the Act.
1 nomination * Todd was an officer in the 7th Battalion (LI) The Parachute Regiment. On D-Day this Battalion made contact with Major Howard at the Orne Bridge now called Pegasus Bridge. Todd was the officer who made contact. In THE LONGEST DAY, he played Major Howard and the meeting with Todd was one scene. In D-DAY THE SIXTH OF JUNE, he played the commander of his Battalion in the filming of the same scene. |
