Born in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan. A radio and nightclub vocalist from her teens, she came to the US in the 1950s and through TV exposure landed an Oscar®-winning part in the film SAYONARA. She was subsequently seen on Broadway (Flower Drum Song) and on TV ("The Courtship of Eddie's Father" series). But she was seen in only a handful of films since SAYONARA (CRY FOR HAPPY and FLOWER DRUM SONG, both 1961; THE HORIZONTAL LIEUTENANT, 1962; and A GIRL NAMED TAMIKO, 1963).
