Born in New York State, USA. Film editor who entered American film as an uncredited assistant on GONE WITH THE WIND (1939). He was first credited as film editor on THE MOON AND SIXPENCE (U/A) and HEART OF THE GOLDEN WEST (Republic) (both 1942). During the next 15 years, he would edit 65 Republic releases, including SLEEPY LAGOON (1943), THE FIGHTING SEABEES (1944), FLAME OF BARBARY COAST (1945), WAKE OF THE RED WITCH (1948), SANDS OF IWO JIMA (1949), SINGING GUNS (1950), BULLFIGHTER AND THE LADY (1951), FAIR WIND TO JAVA (1953), JOHNNY GUITAR (1954) and FLAME OF THE ISLANDS (1956). When Republic closed down its film production, Van Enger began editing for TV series: "The Adventures of Fu Manchu," "Frontier Doctor," "Bonanza," "Stagecoach West," "Bus Stop," "Combat!" and "The High Chaparral."
