Born in Brooklyn, NY; educated at Brooklyn College. Story writer who entered American film with TWO IN A TAXI (1941) at Columbia. Other notable credits include TEN GENTLEMEN FROM WEST POINT (1942), THE NAKED CITY (1948), OUTRAGE (1950, also assoc. producer), MAN ON FIRE (1957), STREETS OF DARKNESS (1958), AL CAPONE (1959), PAROXISMUS (1969), IN SEARCH OF HISTORIC JESUS (1979) and a number of scripts for TV series and made-for-TV movies from 1951 to 1980 ("Goodyear Television Playhouse," "Cavalcade of America," "Climax!," "The Alcoa Hour," "Have Gun - Will Travel," "Peter Gunn" and "Combat!").
During World War II, Wald enlisted in the Army Air Forces and helped make more than 30 training and recruitment films at the First Motion Picture Unit at the old Hal Roach Studio in Culver City, sometimes getting screen time as an extra. He taught screenwriting at USC for many years and wrote essays and articles about film history. His older brother was producer Jerry Wald.
