Born in New York City (some sources say Boston). Worked as assistant cameraman or camera operator on such features as MR. MOTO'S LAST WARNING (1939); REBECCA (1940); MOONRISE and FORCE OF EVIL (both 1948); SAMSON AND DELILAH (1949); LET'S DANCE and MR MUSIC (both 1950). THE COUNTRY GIRL (1954) was his first film as Director of Photography, for which he received an Oscar nomination. Other notable (un-nominated) credits include THE SEVEN LITTLE FOYS (1955); THE PROUD AND PROFANE, THE SEARCH FOR BRIDEY MURPHY and ANYTHING GOES (all 1956). He started working for Alfred Hitchcock, first in television ("Alfred Hitchcock Presents," 1955, and "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour," 1962) and was D.P. on TORN CURTAIN (1966). He worked mainly in television from 1958 until his retirement in 1972.
