Born Bernice Kamiat in Brooklyn, NY. An actress since childhood, she came to Hollywood in her teens and for a while lent her voice to the dubbing of animated cartoons. She was signed by Fox in 1942 and subsequently played supporting parts, both dramatic and comic, and an occasional lead. She was featured prominently in such diverse films as BOOMERANG! (1947) and THE GIRL NEXT DOOR (1953) and was nominated for an Oscar® for her performance in THE DEFIANT ONES (1958).
Other notable film credits include SWEET AND LOW-DOWN (1944), MEET ME IN LAS VEGAS (1956), THE HELEN MORGAN STORY (1957), NEVER STEAL ANYTHING SMALL (1959), THE MAN FROM THE DINER'S CLUB (1963), DOCTORS' WIVES (1971), THE WHITE BUFFALO (1977) and her last film, THE ONE MAN JURY (1978). She has also appeared extensively on television, including "Pete and Gladys" with Harry Morgan and her own comedy series, "The Cara Williams Show." She was married to actor John Drew Barrymore, from 1952 until 1959.
