Born in Oklahoma City, OK. He began his film career in England as a cutter in 1933. Returning to the US in 1939, he joined RKO, for which he edited many films through the late 40s. In 1954 he surpassed this first achievement with an excellent feature documentary of the real American West, THE COWBOY, which he also produced. He subsequently worked as second-unit director on several films and was associate producer and coordinator of battle episodes on THE LONGEST DAY (1962). He was then put in charge of Fox's operations in Britain. In 1970 he produced TORA! TORA! TORA! and the following year was appointed head of worldwide production at Fox.
