Born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Winner of a special Oscar for his performance in the 1953 British film THE KIDNAPPERS (released in the US in 1954 as THE LITTLE KIDNAPPERS), he later appeared in several other films (THE DARK AVENGER, 1955; DAY OF GRACE, 1956; TIME LOCK, 1957; BEYOND THIS PLACE and THE BRIDAL PATH, both 1959; GORGO and GREYFRIARS BOBBY, both 1961; ALMOST ANGELS, 1962; THE THREE LIVES OF THOMASINA, 1963), then settled in Australia, where he remained active on the stage.
