Born in West Clobham, Surrey, England. During World War II, Addison was a soldier in XXX Corps, the British tank force that drove north through Holland during Operation Market Garden commencing Sept. 17, 1944. He wrote the music score for a A BRIDGE TOO FAR (1977), which depicts Operation Market Garden, as a tribute to his fellow tankers of XXX Corps.
After the war he became a prolific scorer of British films, plays, ballets, and TV dramas. Some of his notable (non-nominated) scores for films that enjoyed success in the US include: LOOK BACK IN ANGER (1958); THE ENTERTAINER (1960); A TASTE OF HONEY (1961); THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER (1962); THE LOVED ONE (1965); TORN CURTAIN and A FINE MADNESS (both 1966); START THE REVOLUTION WITHOUT ME (1970); LUTHER (1973); THE SEVEN-PER-CENT SOLUTION (1976); and A BRIDGE TOO FAR. He was awarded an Oscar® in 1964 for TOM JONES. Addison died of a stroke in Bennington, Vermont, on December 7, 1998.
