Born in Broseley, Shropshire, England. Celebrated star of the English and American stage, in films from 1927, most notably KIPPS (1941), QUARTET (1948), PASSPORT TO PIMLICO (1949), SCROOGE (1951), THE PICKWICK PAPERS (1952), ROOM AT THE TOP (1959), MIDNIGHT LACE (1960), THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN and MARY POPPINS (both 1964), and THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE (1967). She is best known to younger audiences as the sodden, cynical and very funny Mrs. Naugatuck on the TV series "Maude." From 1956, she appeared frequently on television in dramatic specials, episodes of series and made-for-TV movies.
Her sister was actress Angela Baddeley (1904 - 1976).
