Born in the Bronx, NY; trained at the Actors Studio, New York. Celebrated character player who entered films with ON THE WATERFRONT (1954), after considerable stage and TV experience. Particularly memorable in 12 ANGRY MEN (1957), as the doomed private dick Arbogast in PSYCHO (1960), and as the studio chief in THE CARPETBAGGERS (1964).
