Most of Barry's film work reflects his earlier leanings but he is equally at home with less contemporary settings, as evidenced by the award-winning THE LION IN WINTER (1968). Ohter notable (non-nominated scores include THE L-SHAPED ROOM (1963); ZULU (1964); THE IPCRESS FILE and KING RAT (both 1965); THE CHASE, THE WRONG BOX, THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM and THE WHISPERERS (all 1966); PETULIA (1968), MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969); THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS (1971); THE DOVE (1974); DAY OF THE LOCUST (1975); KING KONG and ROBIN AND MARION (both 1976); THE DEEP and FIRST LOVE (both 1977); THE BETSY (1978); THE BLACK HOLE (1979); SOMEWHERE IN TIME , NIGHT GAMES and INSIDE MOVES (all 1980); BODY HEAT (1981); THE COTTON CLUB (1984); THE JAGGED EDGE (1985); HOWARD THE DUCK, PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED and songs for THE GOLDEN CHILD (all 1986); INDECEND PROPOSAL and MY LIFE (both 1993); CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY and THE SCARLET LETTER (both 1995); MERCURY RISING (1998); and ENIGMA (2001). As of 2007, he has composed music for almost 120 films, videos and made-for-TV movies.
When Barry won Oscars® for Original Music Score and Original Song from BORN FREE (1966), not only was it his first Oscar victory, it was also the first time an Englishman had won both those particular categories. Barry first heard of his wins from friend (and future Phantom of the Opera star) Michael Crawford who'd seen the ceremonies on TV in New York and called him in the UK with the news. Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1998, he was awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1999 Queen's Birthday Honors List for his services to music. His second wife was actress-singer Jane Birkin.
