Becket (1964)
Born in London, England; educated at the Royal Society of Art Masters. Distinguished designer who pioneered the use of back projection in England and specialized in costume dramas.

Carter entered British film as an assistant set designer for Hitchcock's THE LADY VANISHES (1938) at Gainsborough Pictures. Other early art department credits include NIGHT TRAIN TO MUNICH (1940, ass't art director), COTTAGE TO LET (1942, ass't art director), and WE DIVE A DAWN (1943, draughtsman) -- all uncredited. Carter was a founding member of the Guild of Film Art Directors.
