Becket (1964)

Born in London, England; educated at the Royal Society of Art Masters. Distinguished designer who pioneered the use of back projection in England and specialized in costume dramas. Carter entered British film as an assistant set designer for Hitchcock's THE LADY VANISHES (1938) at Gainsborough Pictures. Other early art department credits include NIGHT TRAIN TO MUNICH (1940, ass't art director), COTTAGE TO LET (1942, ass't art director), and WE DIVE A DAWN (1943, draughtsman) -- all uncredited. As production desinger, his credits include SNOWBOUND (1948), THE ASTONISHED HEART and CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS (both 1949), THE SPANISH GARDENER (1956), ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS (1969), FEAR IS THE KEY (1972), FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE (1973), THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT (1975), AT THE EARTH'S CORE (1976), THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT (1977), and NORTH SEA HIJACK and THE FIRST GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY (both 1979). Carter was a founding member of the Guild of Film Art Directors.
