Born in Reigate, Surrey, England. Talented, prolific editor of feature films. After working as a plastic surgery nurse and splicing religious films prior to shipment back to their distributor, she entered British films as an editor with THE PICKWICK PAPERS, 1952. Other notable (non-nominated) credits include THE HORSE'S MOUTH, 1958; THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES, 1965; MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, 1974; RAGTIME, 1981; GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN, LORD OF THE APES, 1984; CHAPLIN, 1992; CONGO, 1995; ERIN BROCKOVICH, 2000; SWEET NOVEMBER, 2001; and UNFAITHFUL, 2002. Coates won an Oscar® for her work on David Lean's 1962 classic LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and also acted as a consultant on the restoration of the film in 1989. Son Anthony Hickox is a director.
She was awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the British Empire) in the 2003 Queen's New Year's Eve Honours List for her services to film editing in the USA. Married to director Douglas Hickox until his death in 1988. Their son, Anthony Hickox (b. 1964), has made a name for himself as an actor and director of action/horror features.
