Born Robert Walden Cassotto in The Bronx, NY. Having lost his father before birth, he was raised by his mother with the aid of welfare. He did not find out until the age of 32 that the woman he thought to be his sister was in fact his mother and and the woman he thought was his deceased mother was in fact his grandmother.
In the late 1950s he emerged as a highly successful nightclub and recording singing star and won two Grammy Awards in 1960 for his rendition of "Mack the Knife," which sold 2 million copies. He subsequently played both light and dramatic roles in films and was nominated for an Oscar® for his portrayal of a shell-shocked GI in CAPTAIN NEWMAN, M.D. (1963). Long plagued by heart trouble, he died at 37 following open-heart surgery. His first wife (1960-1967) was actress Sandra Dee. Darin was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
