Born Phillipe Claude Alex de Broca de Ferrussac in Paris, France; educated at the Paris Technical School of Photography and Cinematograpy. De Broca began as a cameraman on a 16mm documentary shot in Africa. He later was assistant to directors Decoin, Lacombe, Chabrol, and Truffaut. Making his debut as director in the late 1950s, he quickly moved away from his roots in the French New Wave and became identified with eccentric, irreverant comedies, made with gusto and technical skill. Many of them starred Jean-Pierre Cassel and later Jean-Paul Belmondo.
In his career, de Broca directed 5 different actors in César-nominated performances: Nicole Garcia, Stéphane Freiss, Daniel Auteuil, Marie Gillain and Vincent Perez. Garcia and Freiss won Césars for their performances in de Broca films. De Broca's own production company, Fildebrol, is managed by his first wife, Michèle. They adopted a son, a Nepal native they took in while filming UP TO HIS EARS on location in 1965. He was married briefly (1983-84) to actress Margo Kidder, and his third wife was actress Valérie Rojan.
