Born in Council Bluffs, IA. Many of his 300 patented inventions contributed to the development of motion pictures, radio, and TV, including: a method of synchronizing sound on film (Phonofilm), which he introduced in 1923; dubbing and blooping systems; and a camera blimp. He was also the inventor of the "Audion" vacuum tube, which by its ability to amplify signals and to oscillate (generate signals), provided the crucial enabling technology for the rapid development of radio.
The Academy awarded him a special Oscar® at the Awards ceremonies in 1960.
