Jacques Demy
(1931 - 1990)

Born in Pont-Château, France; educated at Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Nantes; Ecole Technique de Photographie et de Cinématographie, Paris. Versatile director whose films, such as LOLA (1961), are generally noted for their stylish, bittersweet romanticism. Demy made several musicals, including THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG (1964) -- in which all the dialogue was sung -- and worked often with actress Catherine Deneuve and composer Michel Legrand.

Demy's first recorded film credit is the 26-minute documentary LE SABOTIER DU VAL DE LOIRE (1955) about a Loire Valley clogmaker. He followed it in 1957 with a short film, LE BEL INDIFFÉRENT, that he adapted from a story by Jean Cocteau. Subsequent short films included MUSÉE GRÉVIN (1958), LA MÉRE ET L'ENFANT and ARS (both 1959). His first feature film, LOLA (1961), starred Anouk Aimée. Other notable feature credits include LES SEPT PÉCHÉS CAPITAUX (1962), LA BAIE DES ANGES (1963), LES PARAPLUIES DE CHERBOURG (1964), LES DEMOISELLES DE ROCHEFORT (1967), MODEL SHOP (1969), PEAU D'ÀNE (1970), THE PIED PIPER (1972), LE ÉVÉNEMENT LE PLUS IMPORTANT DEPUIS QUE L'HOMME A MARCHÉ SUR LA LUNE (1973), LADY OSCAR (1979), UNE CHAMBRE EN VILLE (1982), PARKING (1985), and TROIS PLACES POUR LE 26 and LA TABLE TOURMANTE (both 1988).

Demy was married to director Agnès Varda from 1962 until his death from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1990. His children are actor Mathieu Demy (b. 1972) and actress/costume designer Rosalie Varda.
