Born in London, England. Entered British films as a matte artist in 1935. Worked on such notable British features as THINGS TO COME, 1936; FIRE OVER ENGLAND, 1937; THE FOUR FEATHERS, 1939; THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, 1940; and MAJOR BARBARA, 1941. After service in World War II, he returned to work on BLACK NARCISSUS, 1947; THE RED SHOES, 1948; TREASURE ISLAND, 1950; QUO VADIS?, 1951; and CAPTAIN HORATIO HORNBLOWER, 1951. He came to the US and joined the Disney Studio as matte artist, special effect photographer, art director and production designer. Other notable (non-nominated) credits include OLD YELLER, 1957; DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE, 1959; KIDNAPPED, SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON and POLLYANNA, all 1960; THE ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR, 1961; IN SEARCH OF THE CASTAWAYS, 1962; SON OF FLUBBER, 1963. Being one of the best matte artists in the business, he also freelanced on such features as SPARTACUS, 1960; SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE, 1987; and DICK TRACY, 1990.
