Born in the Bronx, NY; educated at Cornell. Began collaborating on plays with his wife Phoebe shortly after their marriage in 1934. Their first stage hit, Three's a Family, was produced on Broadway in 1943. Take Her, She's Mine, another Broadway success, in 1961, was later adapted for the screen. The Ephrons collaborated on many light screenplays from the mid-40s, including LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING (1949), ON THE RIVIERA (1951), WHAT PRICE GLORY (1952), THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS (1954) and DADDY LONG LEGS (1955). Henry also produced several films, including CAROUSEL (1956), DESK SET (1957) and A CERTAIN SMILE (1958). His only directorial effort was SING, BOY, SING (1958). He authored a memoir of his collaboration with his first wife, Phoebe, We Thought Could Do Anything (1977). Their daughter is writer-director Nora Ephron; another is writer-production executive Amy Ephron. In 1978 he married actress June Gale, widow of Oscar Levant.
