Born in Rome, Italy. In the early 1950s he began writing screenplays for Italian films, mostly in collaboration with Pasquale Festa Campanile, with whom he began co-directing in the early 1960s. He shared an Oscar® nomination for the original script of Nanni Loy's LE QUATTRO GIORNATE DI NAPOLI / THE FOUR DAYS OF NAPLES (1962). He shared a 1958 Cannes Film Festival award for best screenplay with collaborators Campanile and Pier Paolo Pasolini for their comedy GIOVANI MARITI / YOUNG HUSBANDS, 1957.
