Born in Tombstone, AZ. He joined Paramount as an apprentice cutter at age 15 and began editing on his own in the late 1930s, soon becoming Preston Sturges' favorite editor [THE LADY EVE (1941), SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS (1942), THE PALM BEACH STORY (1942), THE MIRACLE OF MORGAN'S CREEK (1944), et al.]. After several middling outings as a director in the late 1940s and early 50s [THE VIRGINIAN (1946), HOT LEAD (1951), and CAPTIVE WOMEN (1952), among others] he returned to the cutting room. Other notable (non-nominated) credits include ROAD TO UTOPIA (supervising editor, 1946), THE CONQUEROR (1956), THE ENEMY BELOW (1957), THE SOUND AND THE FURY (1959), JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (1959), HATARI! (1962), TWO FOR THE SEESAW (1962), TOYS IN THE ATTIC (1963), THE WORLD OF HENRY ORIENT (1964), A RAGE TO LIVE (1965), HAWAII (1966), THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (1967) and SWEET CHARITY (1969).
His son is producer William S. Gilmore (AGAINST ALL ODDS, WHITE NIGHTS, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, MIDNIGHT RUN, et al.).
