![]() Becket (1964) |
Born in Hampstead, London, England; educated at Oxford University (law); son of famous British pantomime actors Shaun Glenville and Dorothy Ward. Responsible for directing several feature films, starting with THE PRISONER (1955) and concluding with his somewhat awkward adaptation of Graham Greene's THE COMEDIANS (1967). Perhaps it was during Glenville's theatrical tenure, as an actor in the 1930s and director in the 40s, that he developed his taste in films. Over the course of twelve years, Glenville directed clubfooted costume dramas and stock boulevard farces, usually fronted by high-profile thespians. SUMMER AND SMOKE (1961) starred Geraldine Page and Laurence Harvey; HOTEL PARADISO (1966) featured Gina Lollobrigida and Alec Guinness; THE COMEDIANS starred Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton; and BECKET (1964) starred Burton and Peter O'Toole.
