Born in Weybridge, Surrey, England. Began his career as assistant art director on John Huston's MOBY DICK (1956) and went on to work on nearly all the director's subsequent films. Notable (un-nominated) credits include: (As Art Director) HEAVEN KNOWS, MR. ALLISON, 1957; THE MISFITS, 1961; FREUD, 1962; THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER, 1963; and THIS PROPERTY IS CONDEMNED, 1966. (As Production Designer) THIS PROPERTY IS CONDEMNED, 1966; RELECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE, 1967; RYAN'S DAUGHTER, 1970; THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR, 1975; MURDER BY DEATH, 1976; BOBBY DEERFIELD, 1977; THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN, 1979; URBAN COWBOY, 1980; ON GOLDEN POND, 1981; THE DRESSER, 1983; and THE DEAD, 1987.
