Born in Ohio, USA. Entered films as art director on THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951). Worked in film and television for the next twenty years. Notable (un-nominated) credits include THE PRIDE OF ST. LOUIS (1952), RIVER OF NO RETURN (1954), THE RAINS OF RANCHIPUR (1955), A KISS BEFORE DYING and BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL (both 1956), THE YOUNG LIONS and TEN NORTH FREDERICK (both 1958), NEVER SO FEW (1959), THE WHEELER DEALERS (1963), ICE STATION ZEBRA (1968), MARLOWE (1969) and THEY CALL ME MISTER TIBBS! (1970).
