Born in Quincy, Florida. Even though he was born in the US, Holt was a French citizen. He fought with the French Resistance during WWII and was arrested in the eastern city of Grenoble in December 1943 when transferring money for anti-Nazi Resistance fighters. He was sent to Auschwitz. Entered French cinema in 1953 as production designer for the Gilles Margaritis short LES QUATRE MOUSQUETAIRES. Holt then worked in the art department as production designer or art director for a number of European productions, including THE TRAIN (1964), TWO FOR THE ROAD (1967), LOVE AND DEATH (1975), JULIA (1977, BAFTA nomination), and AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS (1987, César Award).
