Began his film career in the employ of Walt Disney, working on such cartoon features as SNOW WHITE, PINOCCHIO (1940), FANTASIA (1940), and BAMBI (1942). He made training films for the US Navy during WW II. He later joined UPA, where his work stood out for its superior quality. In 1949 he helped create the Mr. Magoo cartoon character, based on an uncle, and directed the first Magoo cartoon, RAGTIME BEAR (1949). Gaining an international reputation as one of the most creative figures in the world of animation, he set up his own company, Storyboard Productions, in 1955 and created many intelligent, educational, and entertaining cartoons, for theatrical release as well as TV commercials. He won Oscars® for the animated shorts MOONBIRDS (1959) and THE HOLE (1962). He directed the cartoon sequences in the feature THE FOUR POSTER (1952) as well as animated title sequences for several other features. His wife, Faith Hubley, collaborated on his films as producer, writer, and animator.
