Born in Los Angeles, the daughter of Mexican-born actress Lupita Taylor and Czech-born Hollywood agent Paul Kohner. She became a leading lady of Hollywood films of the late 1950s and early 60s, as well as on stage and TV. She was nominated for an Academy Award as best supporting actress for her performance in IMITATION OF LIFE (1959). She made a number of guest appearance on TV (1955-1963): "The Alcoa Hour" (1955), "Wagon Train" (1957), "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" (1955), "Route 66" (1960), "Rawhide" (1959), et al. Other notable (non-nominated) screen appearance include THE GENE KRUPA STORY (1959), THE BIG FISHERMAN (1959), ALL THE FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS (1960) and FREUD (1962). She retired from acting after her 1964 marriage to fashion designer John Weitz. Later volunteered as hostess of weekly radio show on Touch, a network for the blind, and became a member of the Board of Associates of the Julliard School of Music.
She is the mother of writer-directors Chris (b. 1970) and Paul (b. 1966) Weitz (AMERICAN PIE and ABOUT A BOY).
