Born in East Grinstead, Sussex, England. Wrote for film and television from 1954. Notable screenwriting credits include ANOTHER SKY (1954, also director), BIGGER THAN LIFE (1956, uncredited), BITTER VICTORY (1957), SONS AND LOVERS (1960), THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE (1961), INSIDE DAISY CLOVER (1965, from his novel), WHOEVER SLEW AUNTIE ROO? (1971), INTERVAL (1973), I NEVER PROMISED YOU A ROSE GARDEN (19771), and CAFTAN D'AMOUR (1988). Notable television credits include teleplays for "Liberce: Behind the Music" (1988), "Sweet Bird of Youth" (1989) and "Dead on the Money" (1991), his last recorded writing project for film or TV. He also occasionally appeared as an actor.
Lambert was a well-respected commentator on film, film history and the Hollywood community. His memoir/biography of life-long friend Lindsay Anderson (director of THIS SPORTING LIFE, IF... and O LUCKY MAN) is entitled Mainly About Lindsay Anderson and was published in 2000. Lambert also authored The Dangerous Edge (1970), GWTW: The Making of Gone With the Wind (1973), The Slide Area: Scenes of Hollywood Life, Running Time, Norma Shearer: A Life (1990), The Goodbye People (2000) and On Cukor (2000). A long-time friend of actress Natalie Wood, he wrote her biography, Natalie Wood: A Life (2004).
