Born in Merced, CA. Began his career in 1934 as a camera loader and graduated to cinematographer in 1957. Lathrop proved himself a meticulous craftsman with films such as THE CINCINNATI KID (1965) and POINT BLANK (1967) and shot several of the big-budget, spectacular "disaster" films favored by Hollywood in the 1970s. He also worked in television. Other notable cinematography credits include EXPERIMENT IN TERROR, LONELY ARE THE BRAVE and THE DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES (all 1963), THE PINK PANTHER (1964), THE HAPPENING (1967), I LOVE YOU, ALICE B. TOKLAS! and FINIAN'S RAINBOW (both (1968), THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? (1969), PORTNOY'S COMPLAINT (1972), MAME, THE PRISONER OF SECOND AVENUE and AIRPORT 1975 (all 1974), AIRPORT '77 (1977), THE CONCORDE: AIRPORT '79 (1979), JEKYLL & HYDE... TOGETHER AGAIN and HAMMETT (both 1982), and the Oscar®-winning short film RAY'S MALE HETEROSEXUAL DANCE HALL (1987).
