Michel Legrand
(1932 -     )
Biography from various sources

Born in Paris, France; son of Raymond Legrand (composer for French films from the 1940s through the 1970s); educated at the Paris Conservatoire. Legrand worked as a piano accompanist for singers including Juliette Greco and Bing Crosby and enjoyed success as a composer and singer of popular music before turning his attention to the screen in the mid-1950s. His richly melodic work graced the early films of New Wave directors such as Jean-Luc Godard and Agnès Varda and he has subsequently worked with international figures including Norman Jewison, Joseph Losey, Kon Ichikawa and Orson Welles. Legrand has also enjoyed a long and fruitful association with fellow-countryman Jacques Demy. Other notable (non-nominated) credits include ICE STATION ZEBRA (1968), THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1974), THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT and SEMI-TOUGH (both 1977), ATLANTIC CITY and MELVIN AND HOWARD (both 1980), NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN (1983), PRÊT-À-PORTER / READY TO WEAR (1994), and the theme for the TV movie "Brian's Song" (1970) which became extremely popular.

He made his feature directing debut with CINQ JOURS EN JUIN / FIVE DAYS IN JUNE (1988), an autobiographical drama set against the Normandy landings.
