Born in Yokohama, Japan. Began composing for Japanese films in 1951, and continued a successful career until his retirement in 1978. He composed the score for REFLECTION IN A GOLDEN EYE (1967). He was married to actress Yôko Katsuragi (b. 1930) from 1953 until his death in 1997. Their son Rintaro Mayuzumi (b. 1953) is a film director.
