Born Ada Thompson in Manchester, England. Stage-trained actress who came to attention for her Oscar®-nominated performance in ALFIE (1966). She was nominated for Broadway's 1967 Tony® Award as Best Actress (Dramatic) for The Homecoming. In addition to working extensively for British television, Merchant was also memorable as the dotty housewife in Alfred Hitchcock's FRENZY (1972). She also appeared in ACCIDENT (1967), ALFRED THE GREAT (1969), UNDER MILK WOOD and THE OFFENCE (both 1972), THE HOMECOMING (1973) and THE MAIDS (1974).
From 1956 to 1980, Merchant was married to playwright Harold Pinter. Following her divorce from Pinter, she became a chronic alcoholic and died at 53 of cirrhosis of the liver.
