Started in the art department in silent films in 1925 at MGM. His early art direction credits include TUGBOAT ANNIE and DANCING LADY (both 1933), and THE MYSTERY OF MR. X (1934). Then, he worked on the musical presentation of MGM films from 1937 until 1944. Among them are A DAY AT THE RACES, BROADWAY MELODY OF 1938 and ROSALIE (all 1937), THE GIRL OF THE GOLDEN WEST and SWEETHEARTS (both 1938), BROADWAY MELODY OF 1940 and BITTER SWEET (both 1940), ZIEGFELD GIRL, LADY BE GOOD, THE CHOCOLATE SOLDIER and BABES ON BROADWAY (all 1941), FOR ME AND MY GAL and SHIP AHOY (both 1942), DU BARRY WAS A LADY, GIRL CRAZY and I DOOD IT (all 1943) and BROADWAY RYHTHM (1944). Moving out of musical presentation and back into art direction, his credits include ZIEGFELD FOLLIES (1946), ROSE MARIE (1954), THE FASTEST GUN ALIVE (1956), THE INVISIBLE BOY (1957), NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959), FURY RIVER (1961), THE HORIZONTAL LIEUTENANT (1962), HOOTENANNY HOOT (1963), YOUR CHEATIN' HEART (1964), HOT RODS TO HELL and DOUBLE TROUBLE (both 1967), THE YOUNG RUNAWAYS and his last feature film, THE YOUNG RUNAWAYS (both 1968).
Working also in television, Pye was art director on episodes of several series, including "The Twilight Zone," "Outlaws," "Combat!," "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," "Julia" and several made-for-TV movies.
