Born in Newark, NJ. In films from the late 1940s, he often worked in collaboration with his wife, Harriet Frank Jr. Two of their scripts (HUD, 1963, and NORMA RAE, 1979), were nominated for Academy Awards. Their other credits include scripts for THE LONG HOT SUMMER, 1958; THE SOUND AND THE FURY, 1959; HOMBRE, 1967 (also co-prod.); THE REIVERS, 1969 (also co-prod.); THE COWBOYS, 1972; CONRACK, 1974; MURPHY'S ROMANCE, 1985; and STANLEY & IRIS, 1990.
