Born in County Mayo, Ireland. Born into a Protestant Anglo-Irish family and the daughter of a British engineer, she and her three sisters were educated by private governesses in Ireland. After an uncredited film debut in SPELLBOUND (1940), she began to be featured in British films such as ONE OF OUR AIRCRAFT IS MISSING (1942). She received supporting actress nominations for her performances as the sensuous omnivore Mrs. Waters opposite Albert Finney in TOM JONES (1963) and as Emilia in Laurence Olivier's OTHELLO (1965). She continued to work mainly in the threatre and television into the 2000s. She owned a small island off the Irish mainland for a number of years that she later sold. Her niece is actress Amanda Redman.
