Born Mary Frances Reynolds in El Paso, TX. Bubbly, wholesome star of the 1950s and 60s, primarily in MGM musicals and light comedies. Reynolds was at her best in the classic SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952), as the spirited title character of Frank Tashlin's SUSAN SLEPT HERE (1954) and -- appropriately -- as THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN (1964). Her daughter by first husband (1955-59) Eddie Fisher is actress Carrie Fisher, whose semi-autobiographical novel, Postcards From the Edge, was adapted for the screen in 1990; the Reynolds character was portrayed by Shirley MacLaine.
Her second husband, shoe magnate Harry Karl, gambled away his fortune as well as hers. She opened her own casino in Las Vegas, a home for her Hollywood museum. Her collection numbers more than 3000 costumes and 46,000 square-feet worth of props and equipment from the silent era up to the 1970s. That casino and museum closed in 1997 due to financial problems, but she reopened the Hollywood Motion Picture Collection near the new Kodak Theatre in 2002.
