Born in Melbourne, Australia, she began her career in the theatre before becoming an assistant to Roger Furse on the THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL (1957). She designed costumes for such leading ladies as Glenda Jackson, Sarah Miles, Rita Tushingham, Jeanne Moreau and Shirley MacLaine. She liked to work for directors with whom she had an immediate rapport, and chose her projects on that basis. She was costume designer for many influential British films of the 1950s, 60s and early 70s. Other notable credits include LOOK BACK IN ANGER (1958), THE ENTERTAINER (1960), FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (1963), THE KNACK...AND HOW TO GET IT (1965), MADEMOISELLE and BLOWUP (both 1966), RYAN'S DAUGHTER (1970) and SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY (1971).
