Rachel Roberts
(1927 - 1980)
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film

Born in Llanelly, Carmarthen, Wales; trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. Distinguished stage actress who made intermittent film appearances, beginning in 1953 (VALLEY OF SONG). Other notable screen credits include SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING (1960), THIS SPORTING LIFE (1963), A FLEA IN HER EAR (1968), THE RECKONING (1969), DOCTORS WIVES and WILD ROVERS (both 1971), O LUCKY MAN! (1973), MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS (1974), PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK (1975), FOUL PLAY (1978) and YANKS (1979). From 1960, she performed extensively for television in both series and made-for-TV movies.

Married to actors Alan Dobie (1955-61) and Rex Harrison (1962-71). No Bells on Sunday, the actress's posthumously published journal (1985, edited by the late Alexander Walker and interwoven with commentary and interviews from friends and colleagues), offers a harrowing account of her desertion by Harrison, her slide into substance abuse and her subsequent suicide by swallowing lye, alkali, or another unidentified caustic substance on top of barbiturates.
