Sometimes billed as Frederic or Fritz Steinkamp

Entered film as an apprentice film editor at MGM in 1951, cut his first film, THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN (1960) and began a productive collaboration with Sydney Pollack in 1969 with THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? Steinkamp began co-editing with his son, William Robert Steinkamp (b. 1953), in the 1980s, and the pair gained recognition for their work on films such as Pollack's TOOTSIE (1982), OUT OF AFRICA (1985) and HAVANA (1990).
Other notable (un-nominated) editing credits include WHERE THE BOYS ARE (1960), PERIOD OF ADJUSTMENT (1962), THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN (1964), MISTER BUDDWING (1965), CHARLY (1968), THE YAKUZA (1975), AGAINST ALL ODDS (1984), WHITE NIGHTS (1985), SCROOGED (1989), THE FIRM (1993) and his last film, SABRINA (1995).

He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Cinema Editors (ACE) in 2001.
