Richard Sylbert

Born in Brooklyn, NY. Leading American art director who studied his craft under the legendary William Cameron Menzies and worked on some of the best American movies from 1960s to the end of the century. Sylbert began his career in TV and did his first significant feature work as art director for Elia Kazan on films such as BABY DOLL (1956), A FACE IN THE CROWD (1957) and SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS (1961, production designer). Subsequent credits of note include THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962) for John Frankenheimer, THE PAWNBROKER (1965) for Sidney Lumet, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? (1966), THE GRADUATE (1967) and CATCH-22 (1970) for Mike Nichols, ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) and CHINATOWN (1974) for Roman Polanski and SHAMPOO (1975), REDS (1981) and DICK TRACY (1990) for Warren Beatty. Other notable (non-nominated) production designer credits include MURDER, INC. (1960), WALK ON THE WILD SIDE (1962), LILITH (1964), GRAND PRIX (1966), THE DAY OF THE DOLPHIN (1973), FRANCES (1982), BREATHLESS (1983), TEQUILA SUNRISE (1988), BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES (1990), CARLITO'S WAY (1993), MULHOLLAND FALLS (1996), MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING (1997), UNCONDITIONAL LOVE (2002) and his last film, TRAPPED (2002).

In 1965, he produced WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT and appeared as the coroner in MULHOLLAND FALLS (1996).

Divorced from costume designer-turned-producer Anthea Sylbert and twin brother of Oscar-winning art director Paul Sylbert.
