Born in London, England. Former camera operator who graduated to cinematographer in the mid-1940s. Unsworth demonstrated a deft command of black-and-white in films such as the documentary-like A NIGHT TO REMEMBER (1958) but was chiefly noted for his lush color work, particularly on period films. Unsworth won a British Film Academy Award (Stella) for BECKET (1964) and, in addition to shooting 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968), is credited with helping devise some of its groundbreaking special effects. Unsworth's other outstanding credits include CABARET (1972), for which he won his first Oscar®, and Roman Polanski's sumptuous TESS (1979), during the production of which Unsworth died of a heart attack. Ghislain Cloquet shot the second half of the film, including most of the interiors. Unsworth's Oscar for TESS was shared with Cloquet.
Other notable cinematography credits include THE WORLD OF SUZIE WONG (1960), OTHELLO (1965), HALF A SIXPENCE (1967), THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN (1969), CROMWELL (1970), ZARDOZ (1974), THE RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER and LUCKY LADY (both 1975), A BRIDGE TOO FAR (1977) and SUPERMAN (1978). At the time of his death he had already shot some scenes for SUPERMAN II (1980), which were shot at the same time as those of SUPERMAN. In 1976, Unsworth was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire).
