John Williams
(1932 -     )
Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film

Born in Floral Park, LI, NY; attended UCLA, LA City College and Julliard. Perhaps the best-known composer working in contemporary American film, Williams entered the industry in the 1950s but only came to prominence in the mid-70s, scoring such blockbusters as JAWS (1975), STAR WARS (1977) and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981). Not noted for the subtlety of his scores, Williams has become synonymous with the big-budget spectacles which have dominated Hollywood's output in recent years. Williams re-popularized the epic cinema sound of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Franz Waxman and other composers from the Hollywood Golden Age: STAR WARS became the best selling score-only soundtrack of all time, and spawned countless musical imitators. He has scored most of Steven Spielberg's and George Lucas' films and, from 1980 to 1992, was the conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra.

Williams was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2004. In 2006, he tied Alfred Newman for the most Oscar® nominations received by a composer-conductor (45) when he was nominated for MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA and MUNICH.
