Lothar Wolff
(1909 - 1988)

Born in Bromberg, Posen, Germany (now Bydgoszcz, Poland). Writer, producer, editor. Wolff was a publicist for G.W. Pabst in Germany. His 1930 photograph of Louise Brooks in a bathing suit was reproduced on German postcards. Started in German and French films as a film editor in the early 1930s. European credits include DIE FLEDERMAUS (1931), PRIMA DRAGOSTE (1932), LE TESTAMENT DU DR. MABUSE and DAS TESTAMENT DES DR. MABUSE (both 1933), FLUGTEN FRA MILLIONEME (1934), DET GLYDNE SMIL, FANGE NR. 1 and FRELØS (all 1935).

Wolff came to the US in 1936 and edited THE RAMPARTS WE WATCH (1940) as the chief film editor of the "March of Time" series. After WW II, he served as Chief of the Motion Picture Section of the Marshall Plan Information Service in Paris. In the early 1950s, Wolff began producing feature films, including the highly acclaimed MARTIN LUTHER (1953, also screenplay), WINDJAMMER: THE VOYAGE OF THE CHRISTIAN RADICH (1958, assoc. prod.), MAN ON A STRING (1960), QUESTION 7 and THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE (both 1961). He collaborated on the screenplay for the animated films ANIMAL FARM (1954). He later produced many "National Geographic" and "Time-LIFE" documentaries.
